about opal ski club
Founded in 1962 with 3 Generations of Opal Members

Founded in 1962

Our History

The Old Paradians’ Association Ski Club was formed in September 1962 by a group of like-minded individuals who enjoyed skiing, bushwalking and the alpine environment in general. Their desire for a permanent on-mountain lodge was achieved in 1967 with the construction of an A frame building designed and physically built by the members themselves with little outside assistance. Today, the lodge is known simply as Opal.

Winter & Summer

Social Events

The annual Club Weekend, held in August for Full Members only, is the highlight of the Opal calendar: the Club Champion is decided and celebrated with dinner.

Various other social events are held throughout the year. Usually held in Melbourne, these gatherings include a Christmas social and a pre-ski season dinner and are open to all membership categories.

honouring our members

Club Awards

The President’s Award, introduced in 2003 and awarded annually, recognises the significant contribution to the Club by a member or members. The inaugural winner of The President’s Award, founding member Ian Leach, set the tradition of the ‘trophy on the head’ photo, a ritual that now goes hand-in-hand (or should that be trophy-on-head) with winning the trophy.
